An outdated kitchen with dark cherry cabinets and a poor layout was gutted to create a bright new space. The new layout added a dark island that provides storage, houses a drawer microwave, and conceals the trash and recycling containers. The contrasting light cabinets on the perimeter of the kitchen feature a chocolate glaze and “fly specking” to add dimension and show off the beauty of the wood. Seeded glass was chosen for the butler’s pantry cabinet fronts to showcase the homeowner’s collection of decorative barware. Extra lighting under the cabinets as well as pendants over the island were added to make the kitchen a gathering place for the whole family to enjoy.
